The purpose of this website is to bring forward knowledge and to inform interested parties in the activities within the Non Timber Forest Products industry in the northern parts of Vancouver Island and the Mid Coast regions, more commonly known as the Regional District of Mount Waddington. The goal of this website is to bring into the public domain documented activities carried out by employees, volunteers and community leaders that we have found to be of a dubious nature.
What are Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP)? According to the B.C. Governments Ministry of Forests, NTFP are most products that come from the forests that are not trees. The Ministry has identified over 200 products that are commercially harvested throughout the Province.
Scientific studies on some of these products such as wild mushrooms, wild berries, cedar bark and medicinal plants have been ongoing over the past two decades, and longer in some instances. In the latter part of the 90's there were some attempts at identifying the scientific research and commercial opportunities of forest botanicals on the Northern part of Vancouver Island. This activity was carried out by several people over a period of approximately 9 years and supported by such groups as Community Futures Development Corp., the Regional District of Mount Waddington, Western Economic Diversification, the Coast Sustainability Trust Fund, Simon Fraser university, the University of Victoria, Royal Roads University, the McGregor Model Forest Program, Western Forest Products and North Island College. From these groups many forms of collaboration took place. In some cases the researchers were getting paid by the Society that they were a Board member of that generated the contract in the first place. The Societies accounting was managed by Community Futures of Mount Waddington. It is these associations,and their activities that these web pages will focus on. Such as the Societies and other organizations that were formed to administer the activities of this research.
